A computational study of vortex-airfoil interaction using high-order finite difference methods

چکیده
Simulations of the interaction between a vortex and a NACA0012 airfoil are performed with a stable, high-order accurate (in space and time), multi-block finite-difference solver for the compressible NavierStokes Equations. We begin by computing a benchmark test case to validate the code. Next, the flow with steady inflow conditions are computed on several different grids. The resolution of the boundary layer as well as the amount of the artificial dissipation is studied to establish the necessary resolution requirements. We propose an accuracy test based on the weak imposition of the boundary conditions that does not require a grid refinement. Finally, we compute the vortex-airfoil interaction and calculate the lift and drag coefficients. It is shown that the viscous terms add the effect of detailed small scale structures to the lift and drag coefficients.

Numerical Simulation of the Incompressible Laminar Flow Over a Square Cylinder
Simulation of fluid flow over a square cylinder can be performed in order to understand the physics of the flow over bluff bodies. In the current study, incompressible laminar flow over a confined square cylinder, with variable blockage factor has been simulated numerically, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The focus has been on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. Vorticity...

The fluid-structure coupling process of a plunging rigid airfoil with a thin elastic plate attached at the trailing-edge is simulated numerically by using unsteady potential flow source/vortex panel method and the Euler-Bernoulli beam vibration differential equation. The flow characteristics, the unsteady aerodynamic loads, especially the thrust effects of the plunging motion are computed. The ...

This paper presents a simple and computationally-efficient algorithm for solving steady two-dimensional subsonic and transonic compressible flow over an airfoil. This work uses an interactive viscous-inviscid solution by incorporating the viscous effects in a thin shear-layer. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a parabolic set of coupled, non-linear partial diff...

In this paper we carry out computational studies of three-dimensional flow over flapping wings. The problems we have investigated include, firstly, three-dimensonal simulation of flow over an extruded SD7003 airfoil in plunging motion at transitional Reynolds number and, secondly, flow over a pair of flapping rectangle wings with constant NACA0012 cross-sectional airfoil profile at low Reynolds...
متن کاملUnsteady flow past a plunging airfoil
This paper presents simulations of unsteady flow past a plunging airfoil using the highorder spectral difference (SD) method. Both third-order and fourth-order SD methods are used on unstructured quadrilateral grids. The vortex shedding pattern of an airfoil in an oscillating plunge motion becomes asymmetric at a sufficiently high frequency. The SD method is able to capture this effect and reve...
